If you have previously neglected your canvas awnings, you
might have found that they completely become an eyesore that immediately
detracts from the overall appearance of your home. By thoroughly cleaning your
awning once or twice a year, however, you can ensure that it continues to look
its best for many years to come – just don’t forget the underside of the
canvas!
Step 1: Mix together a solution comprised of 50% mild
dishwashing liquid (the kind you use to wash the dishes is fine) and 50% warm
water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle.
Step 2: Place a ladder against the wall beside your awning,
then climb up (you will need a helper to hold the bottom of the ladder and keep
it steady). Use a broom to brush away any loose debris.
Step 3: Spray the solution that you mixed together in step 1
generously onto the surface of the canvas awning. Make sure that the entire
surface has been covered, not just the middle.
Step 4: Using a scrubbing brush, rub the canvas all over to
dislodge any debris that has worked itself in. For a large surface, you might
like to use a long-handled broom to scrub.
Step 5: Using your garden hose, rinse the solution away.
Then apply a sealant (preferably a weatherproofing one) to the canvas. This will
help to keep the covering clean until you can next do it.
Step 6: Complete each of the above steps for the underside
of the awning. Make sure that you allow the underside to dry completely before
applying the sealant, as this will help to lower the chances of mold
developing.
Many homeowners also believe that their awnings require
additional attention either once a week or once a fortnight to ensure that
airborne debris and plant material has been removed between major cleans. This
is especially important for the underside of the canvas, which is prone to
developing mildew and even stains that are impossible to remove.
When you come to clean your
canvas awnings sydney, if you notice
that they have developed holes due to rotting fabric or misuse, you should strongly
consider replacing them instead of cleaning. This is because the canvas will be
quite difficult to repair properly, and it will still detract from the
appearance of the entire covering.
